Have you noticed how the place in your stomach that contracts when you experience fear is the same place where you experience excitement? We ultimately decide in our minds whether we feel thrilled or whether we are scared. The feeling starts where many feelings originate. And what if we decided that this feeling in the stomach and beating heart was not fear, but the sign of excitement with butterflies in the stomach, as when we fall in love? Do we actually have an opportunity to stop indulging our anxiety and choose to embrace a new opportunity?
I was struck one day when my son decided to experience jumping from a plane with a parachute. He went within the space of a couple of days from sheer excitement and joy to paralyzing fear, and back to thrill once he did it, ready to do it again. I realized the power of aligning our thoughts with our emotions to actually make things happen or stop dead in our tracks.
Let us look briefly at our beliefs. There is nothing wrong with being afraid, provided that it does not stop us from doing what we feel excited to do. Leadership in our lives has a lot to do with feeling comfortable with our level of fear. Mostly, it is about aligning our thoughts and emotions. Reframing things in our mind can go a long way in changing our emotional state. We can create new connections by choosing new thoughts. We often assume that leaders are fearless people. In reality, anyone can cultivate the ability to feel the fear and do it anyway. Just think that you may just be excited…
If it is important to change your mental state from resistance to openness, it is equally important to create new experiences, overcoming fears step by step, through a gradual process, repeating the experience until a level of comfort takes root. Do you recall learning to swim, or to ride a bicycle? You may have felt fear at first, but as you learned and grew more comfortable, the fear turned to excitement.
In other words, it is not the absence of fear that determines leadership! It is the ability to realign our thoughts with our emotions, and practice this realignment over and over again, becoming in charge of life running through our veins.
When I look at the tremendous progress in the last few decades to raise the issue of gender diversity in our work place, in our societies, I feel grateful for the women who took up that cause and fought courageously to raise the visibility and impact of women internationally. As I look back, I realize that the focus has been on numbers: more women in position of power, more women in decision-making circles, more women in the armed forces, more gender advisers in the work force. It originally aimed at equal rights, equal capacity, equal strength.
Today, there is still a lot to be done in ensuring equality and tracking numbers. That work needs to go on. However, beyond numbers and equality lies the issue of quality and specificity. Isn’t it time for gender diversity 2.0?
A woman may not need to step into an assertive role to feel effective and become successful. She does not need to compete with men and become more of a “man” then men themselves to be recognized as equal. No, she needs to be in integrity with her own insights, her own feminine power, to truly demonstrate the depth of her strength, and equally contribute to the world.
It is not necessarily an issue of men and women, as it has more to do with listening to our inner wisdom, our compassionate side. Tapping into energy and ensuring that we connect with this part of ourselves will unleash unlimited strength available to us all as a society.
Women may have an easier time tapping into their intuition openly and relying solely on their inner wisdom or to have the courage to look at a situation with compassion and love. It is not necessarily the case, though. The point is that this is a source of true power that women have a responsibility to exercise and integrate into our daily world place and decision-making circles, as a source of power that will open up the world to creative ideas and inspiration.
This is a world where people will seek to empower themselves and those around them, rather than influence others through their own views and decisions. This is a world where feminine power will have found its place in its own right.
As we start a new year, whatever may be our religious or cultural beliefs, we are looking for new ideas, guidance, new clothes. We often look outside to gain new insights, to find what we are waiting for.
As I am looking at 2018, I am contemplating the thought that I may not have to seek in order to find. I may have had all along what I really need, and it may be more of a case of “what I need” to be revealed to me rather than seeking it. The freedom and joy to realize that I already have what I need; that all is exactly as it should be; and that the trust that there is more than enough for us all in this Universe has opened myself up to the realization that I am what I have been waiting for.
So should you be hoping for a new path, wishing for some guidance or coaching, remember that the answer is within. Make a place for the change you are hoping for and consider that you may just be the change you are calling for. Should this be the type of coaching you feel drawn to, stay tuned. You are clearly attracting it.
We are fast approaching the end of the calendar year. There is no better time to reflect on the meaning of slowing down and taking a break from our busy lives. I find myself so wrapped up in the competing calls, day in and day out, on both my time and my space. I feel drawn out, flooded by external pulls and pushes occupying my mind, invading my inner world –mind-body-spirit.
Are you also taking a break to be able to shift towards being productive at home or elsewhere? Wouldn’t it be nice to check out and reconnect with yourself, refocus on the essentials of life – inner peace and well-being – this sense of oneness with the Universe. The change of perspective will surely take you to another world where time is what you make of it, and space unlimited.
Giving ourselves this time and space for a real break is a trip we can all afford, a most welcome gift we can give to ourselves and to the world, as we saturate our thoughts and emotions with all the answers the Universe has for us should we care to listen in. Have a magical Christmas!
